Coaching

If you are over 18 years of age and are keen to invest in the sport of archery. Why not put something back into the sport and try coaching. You may find an enjoyable, sometimes demanding, extra string to your bow?

There are five categories of coaching:

LEADER

Designed as a basic qualification for situations and personnel outside GNAS, such as leisure centres, activity centres and youth organizations. The leader takes a 25 hour course and is qualified to coach basic archery  to and improve beginners.

ASSISTANT COACH

Fulfils the same role as the leader but within the remit of the GNAS.  As a GNAS member for at least a year they then take a 25hr course and have more training in sport physiology, equipment and GNAS organization, than the leader.
The asst. coach is encouraged to upgrade to Coach after gaining practical experience within their clubs.

COACH

Taken as a 50 hrs. course after asst. coach or straight through for 70 hrs, the coach must have been a GNAS member for 2 years before qualifying, and is trained to coach established archers as well as beginners, being familiar with all styles of shooting and all types of bows. Their remit is again principally at club level.

COUNTY COACH

Must have been active at coach level for 2 years trained to coach archers at all levels, and help with coaching, training and administration. They must be prepared to travel and work outside their clubs.
After experience working under senior coaches on coach training they can gain accreditation to train and assess leaders.

SENIOR { REGIONAL } COACH

Must have been active at county coach level for 3 yrs. Training programme is run nationally rather than on a county or regional level as for the other grades
Expected to Coach at all levels to train and examine coaches at all levels to be prepared to travel anywhere within the UK or abroad if asked. Must be prepared to work on coaching administration locally and nationally.

Apart from leaders certificate, which are renewable every two years depending on work records, all certificates of all other grades are renewable every three years and are dependent on both work record and continued GNAS membership. Basically, if you loose your membership you loose your coaching grade.

This the the situation at present, discussion is now taking place at national level, as to whether or not we convert to a more modular form of training and examination / assessment.
